Jambo Jipya School Timeline

2004Jambo Jipya School was founded in 2004 by a Kenyan woman named Christine Mwende. Christine started the school with one mud hut classroom and less than a dozen students. Her goal was to give the children a safe place to spend their day and at least two meals to eat.

2007 - 2010In 2007, Keela Grimmette (founder of Reason2Smile) first visited Jambo Jipya School to volunteer as a first grade teacher. From 2007-2010, the mud huts of Jambo Jipya School were cemented and many more concrete buildings were erected. Also in 2010, the school expanded from solely a primary school (K-8th grade) to a secondary school – with our first 9th grade class.

2012 - 2013In 2012, Maureen W. was our first student accepted into high-level high schools and attended Bahari Girls’ Secondary School.
In 2013, Jambo Jipya School graduated its first class of 12th graders (Form 4). |

2014 - 2015In 2014, a graduate of Jambo Jipya , Clinton was accepted at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology in Kakamega, Kenya. He will graduate in 2018.
Other students graduate and attend trade schools such as the Kenyan Institute of Business in Mombasa or find work in a specific field. |
2015The students of the Jambo Jipya school had the privilege of a visit from peace activist, musician, author and actor Emmanuel Jal. A former child soldier in the Sudan he spoke about his own struggles in school and never giving up. He encouraged the students to do their best no matter what their circumstances and to get rid of any negative baggage they have. Jal stressed that there will always be obstacles put in your way – it is up to you whether you let them stop you from reaching your goals.

2015Two graduates are pursuing business degrees at the Kenyan Institute of Business in Mombasa. They will complete their studies in 2017 and 2018.
