Children’s Home Timeline

When Jambo Jipya School opened in 2004, many of the children needed a safe place to live but Christine Mwende (the founder and director of the school) couldn’t afford to pay for bedding, extra food, extra staff, and all the other needs the children had. She placed them in safe homes and made sure to watch over them carefully.

- 2010From 2007-2010, more children started living at the school. Eventually extra rooms were built and use solely as dormitory rooms, complete with bunk beds!

In 2011, Reason2Smile was able to help Christine start renting a large home that became Jambo Jipya Children’s Home. It is located just two blocks from Jambo Jipya School. Over the next few years, anywhere from 15-35 children called this their home. The home was two stories, complete with showers and flushing toilets; a large kitchen, dining room, and living room; big porches; and a spacious yard! The children truly thrive here! Two adults oversee the cooking, cleaning, and general care of the children although the children themselves complete most of the chores.

The oldest boys living at Jambo Jipya Children’s Home moved to the boys’ home in 2013. This is a small apartment located a couple blocks from Jambo Jipya School. An adult male staff member lives with the boys and ensures they are safe. The boys eat their meals at Jambo Jipya Children’s Home and attend Jambo Jipya School but sleep in their apartment.

The Jambo Jipya children’s home moved to a new location. The former home was no longer conducive to our needs and not being properly cared for. The new home is very spacious and located in a quiet and safer area of town. The children are much happier here.
