Future Development and Expected Growth of Jambo Jipya School
In January 2009, Jambo Jipya School purchased 23 acres of land thanks to the generosity of people like yourself! The land lies about a 20 minute drive outside the community of Mtwapa. It is very fertile and includes property along the edge of a river. There are already crops growing (maize, casava, beans, banana trees, mango trees, etc) which proves that the space is ideal for sustainable crop growth.
Although our original plan was to transplant the existing school to whatever piece of land we were able to purchase, over the past couple of years our thoughts have changed. We now fully recognize the value of having Jambo Jipya located at the center of Mtwapa... security will be tighter due to the number of people around, transportation won't be a problem, electricity is already accessible, and we won't have to start from scratch with our building structures. Therefore, the plan as of 2011 is to use the 23 acres of land as sustainable farmland where we will be able to grow crops and raise livestock which we can eat and possibly sell as well. Although our current school space is only about 5,000 square feet, the plot adjacent to the school has recently become available to purchase and that would increase our space to approximately 15,000 square feet. Our thought is to build a second and third floor on the already existing structure in order to have more classroom, dormitory, office, and library space. We would then use the open space as area for the children to run and play within the school grounds. At this point we anticipate the school will serve about 400 children (grades K-12) with about 75 of them living in the orphanage. We'd also like to have a large library and resource center that the children and members of the community can use.
In order to accomplish these goals of development we will need about $40,000 to purchase the school land and about $100,000 to construct the buildings. This is on top of the monthly expenses at the school (mainly salaries and food) which are currently $5,000 per month. Therefore, from 2011 to 2015 our fundraising goal is about $450,000. This is definitely an attainable five year goal and we hope you'll help us bring it to fruition! Together we can make a difference!
